‘Island Universe’ in the Coma Cluster

A long-exposure Hubble Space Telescope image shows a majestic face-on spiral galaxy located deep within the Coma Cluster of galaxies, which lies 320 million light- years away in the northern constellation Coma Berenices. The galaxy, known as NGC 4911, contains rich lanes of dust and gas near its center. These are silhouetted against glowing newborn star clusters and iridescent pink clouds of hydrogen, the existence of which indicates ongoing star formation. Hubble has also captured the outer spiral arms of NGC 4911, along with thousands of other galaxies of varying sizes. The high resolution of Hubble’s cameras, paired with considerably long exposures, made it possible to observe these faint details.
This natural-color Hubble image, which combines data obtained in 2006, 2007, and 2009 from the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys, required 28 hours of exposure time.

Wild 2: If You Were There

On Jan. 2, 2004 NASA’s Stardust spacecraft made a close flyby of comet Wild 2 (pronounced “Vilt-2″). Among the equipment the spacecraft carried on board was a navigation camera.that Comet Wild 2 is about 3.1 miles in diameter.

This future aircraft design concept for supersonic flight over land comes from the team led by the Lockheed Martin Corporation.

The team’s simulation shows possibility for achieving overland flight by

dramatically lowering the level of sonic booms through the use of an “inverted-V” engine-under wing configuration. Other revolutionary technologies help achieve range, payload and environmental goals.

This supersonic cruise concept is among the designs presented in April 2010 to the NASA Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate for its NASA Research Announcement-funded studies into advanced aircraft that could enter service in the 2030-2035 timeframe.

Das Thema, dass jeden beschäftigt!

Weniger Arbeitslose bis Ende 2010

3.346.000 Millionen ohne Job – Arbeitslosenquote auf 8,0 Prozent gesunken.

Die Zahl der Arbeitslosen in Deutschland ist im September im Vergleich zum Vormonat um 125.000 auf 3.346.000 gesunken. Das waren 266.000 mehr als vor einem Jahr, wie die Bundesagentur für Arbeit (BA) in Nürnberg mitteilte.

Es gäbe noch viele weitere Wege um mehr Arbeitsmöglichkeiten zu schaffen, hierzu müssten aber die Zuständigen der Regierung bereit sein, auch etwaige Ratschläge von außen anzunehmen.

Eine meiner Vorschläge hierzu wäre, die unzähligen, notwendigen Ausbesserungsmaßnahmen im Straßenverkehr der Städte, sowie der Autobahnen gegen die Arbeitslosigkeit zunutze zu machen. Hierzu wäre es sinnvoll ein 2-3 Schichtsystem anzuwenden, was sowohl die Möglichkeit schafft mehr Arbeitslose zu beschäftigen, als auch die Beschleunigung des Arbeitspensums zur Folge hat. Das langsame Vorangehen der Baustellen im Straßenverkehr hat bekanntlich jährlich viele Unfälle zur Folge, was hierdurch auch eingedämmt werden könnte.

Dies ist nur eine meiner Vorschläge zur Bekämpfung der Arbeitslosigkeit. Auf Wunsch bin ich gerne bereit alle meine weiteren Ideen zur Verfügung zu stellen.

This new image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory’s Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) shows in great detail a solar prominence taken from a March 30, 2010 eruption. The twisting motion of the material is the most noticeable feature. Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, SDO is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun’s magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth’s atmospheric chemistry and climate. Since launch, engineers have been conducting testing and verification of the spacecraft’s components. Now fully operational, SDO will provide images with clarity 10 times better than high-definition television and will return more comprehensive science data faster than any other solar observing spacecraft. طبق این گزارش در یکی از پروازهای هواپیمایی کیش ایر روی مانیتور اعلام مسیر از نام “خلیج عربی” استفاده شده که این امر با اعتراض برخی از مسافران روبرو شده است. خبرگزاری فارس می افزاید سرمهماندار یونانی پرواز این موضوع را توجیه کرده و با اشاره به امنیت پرواز، معترضان رابه بازداشت تهدید کرده بوده است

While ASTER’s 50-foot resolution is not sufficient to see damaged buildings, it can be used to identify other results. Tiny dots of white against the plant-covered landscape (red in this image) are possible landslides, a common occurrence in mountainous terrain after large earthquakes. The possible landslides were identified by carefully comparing the new image with an image acquired one year ago.
Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital, is silver in the false-color image. The rivers are pale blue, while the ocean is dark blue. Exposed soil is white.

The Brightness of the Sun

The bright sun greets the International Space Station in this Nov. 22 image, taken from the Russian section of the orbital outpost and photographed by the STS-129 crew. The 11-day STS-129 mission installed a number of station upgrades and prepared the station for the installation of Node 3, which is slated for another mission.

Satellites Tune In To Middleweight Black Hole

While astronomers have studied lightweight and heavyweight black holes for decades, the evidence for black holes with intermediate masses has been much harder to come by. Now, astronomers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., find that an X-ray source in galaxy NGC 5408 represents one of the best cases for a middleweight black hole to date.
